Taking the Plunge

This week, in preparation to receive his sacraments of reconciliation and Eucharist, our son Leland was asked to write a reflection on what he remembers from his baptism. Of course, we had to “roll the tape” for him. But for me, it was an indelible moment. Our family’s adoption journey was two-and-a-half years, and Leland was match No. 18! Waiting three times longer than the average family, the parish community strengthened us at every up and down, becoming our close companions. Nearly a hundred people from the community showed up that Sunday afternoon to take part in Leland’s first sacrament without a formal invitation. It is humbling and incredibly moving to remember that moment.
As we continue to pray and reflect on what place St. Monica has in our hearts: I know you have those moments, too. Perhaps it was your first Mass, with a welcome by our hospitality ministers, and feeling called by name. Maybe it’s when we join our voices and hands together for The Lord’s Prayer. You and your family have possibly taken part in our Thanksgiving dinner—providing a meal for those who would otherwise go without.
Serve · Support · Sustain speaks to all those moments and more—past, present, and in your life ahead. What better way to show our love of neighbor and God than to serve a meal? A simple, open ear and heart provide support to others in their struggles. Gathering in this place to worship and celebrate together sustains our faith. At its core, stewardship is simply: renewing that commitment to make those moments possible for ourselves and others. Next week, I’ll be presenting many new ways that you can do that. This parish community longs to be your companion—we too, want to serve, support, and sustain you, however we can. Thank you for your prayers and especially for choosing to be #StillStMonica.
